Virtua Fighter 2 out for iPhone

SEGA is bringing the game console and arcade classic to your pocket by giving you Virtua Fighter 2 on your iPhone or iPod Touch. The game looks to be exactly how it was when you played it long ago with no new levels or characters added. You will be stuck with the original eight characters and eight stage levels.

The only changes to the format are the touch screen controls (be prepared to look stupid) and the ability to challenge your friend via Bluetooth.

The fighting game is one of many SEGA titles the company has brought back to the App Store including Streets of Rage, multiple Sonic titles, and the famous Ecco the Dolphin. So bring out a stack of quarters for nostalgia and get tapping.
Virtua Fighter 2 is now available for iPhone and iPod touch for $1.99.

HP/Palm want you thinking about Feb. 9th

HP/Palm has made the “Super Device Countdown” app available, give you a screen with a countdown clock, webOS in the background, and HP logos bouncing all over the screen.  The clock is ticking down to a mysterious February 9th event that HP/Palm is calling “Think Big. Think Small. Think Beyond.”

The event is going to be held in San Francisco and will be webOS centric.  There are rumblings that this could be the unveiling of tablets running webOS.

HP/Palm is possibly looking to make a big splash before Mobile World Congress in Barcelona on February 14th. Stay tuned to see what the super device is.

Twitter now has “Connections” a la Facebook’s “Mutual Friends”

Twitter has now combined its “Followed By” and “You Both Follow” features into one area simply called “Connections.” Similar to Facebook’s “Mutual Friends” area, the Twitter Connections area will allow you to view the number of followers you have in common as well as see complete lists of those followers when you click on “more”.

Twitter hopes to become more useful as a social graph with this new feature. “By exposing accounts that you and another user have in common, you will now know how those acocunts are connected to other accounts you already follow. As a result, you’ll be able to make more informed decisions about which accounts to follow,” says Twitter’s Carolyn Penner. You follow that?

Although Facebook and Foursquare have had this type of social graph in place for some time now, it has been difficult for Twitter to work it into their microblogging network as they also have to contend with the concepts of follower vs friend vs followed. Twitter does not have have any new Connections features planned at this time.

MacBook Air 11-inch GelaSkin Review and Hands-On (with Bonus iPod Touch Review!)

So we were contacted by no less than GelaSkins themselves to see if we’d like to take a look at their brand new MacBook Air protective skins. What did we say? Of COURSE we’d like to take a peek. So they did indeed let us take a peek, and since I just happen to have had a brand new MacBook Air 11″ right here to go with my ancient iPod Touch 2nd gen, I decided to grab a skin for both. For the iPod Touch 2nd gen I decided to go with a massively complex London illustration by my favorite group of pixel illustrators in the world: eboy! Then for the MacBook Air 11-inch, I decided to take the DIY route and have them print my own design.

The design I decided upon for the MacBook Air 11″ was a photo of the army-issue backpack in which I carry all of my accessories and books to and fro. In this way it would not only be protected from scratches, but from nefarious intentioned characters as well. Why? Because if it were printed well enough, it would be totally camouflaged!

When we received the package in which the skins were mailed, we did not instantly know the contents. This is important as these skins are highly sought-after as they work on many different products, even if they aren’t sized correctly. Of course GelaSkins does suggest you use them on the products they intended them for, but weird stuff happens!

Once we we’d opened the first envelope, the excellence was instantly known. High quality plastic sleeves surround two sheets each -one of them an informational sheet, the other containing the skin. These sleeves opened just like you would a comic book sleeve. Newbs- be careful. You don’t want to wreck your comics by having them stick to the sticky part. Once you’ve got the sheets out, you can see the majestically colorful brightness of whatever printers GelaSkins is working with.

The first of two skins we unwrapped was the MacBook Air 11″. Although the top of this computer is relatively small, especially when compared to the rest of the comparable computers on the market, it seems gigantic when you peek the sticky side up from the GelaSkins backer. This protective skin is almost rubbery on the printed side, slightly less sticky than a vinyl sticker you’d put on your car on the sticky side. It’s almost like it’s between a window cling and a bumper sticker, if you know what I mean. I was able to place the skin on the computer PRECISELY after a few tries, but if you’re not a master craftsman, (taught in the fine arts of bookmaking by the Minneapolis masters,) you might want to consider working with two people – one to hold part of the sticker up, the other to place it down. The sticky side is a level of sticky that’s able to be stuck more than once, but the amount of times you can peel it up is finite (though we didn’t need more than 3 or 4 tries to get it perfect.)

The printing on this skin is marvelous. You’ll hear me say the same thing about the iPod Touch skin because it’s a design by people who know how detailed the printers can be here, but I had no idea, and thustly submitted a high-res photograph to test the capability of the GelaSkins colors and sharpness. Completely top notch. I’ve never seen something printed so perfectly on a non-paper surface. I don’t know how they’ve done it, but they’ve done it extremely well. When placed next to the backpack from whens the photograph came, supposing it’s in the same light, they look basically identical. A little bit different in size, obviously, but identical nonetheless.
This laptop goes with me basically everywhere since it is an ultraportable and I do like to bring it along. Therefor it is witness to some medium punishment. I do have an Incase sleeve that I put it in for travel between locations, but once I’m at a place like a coffee shop or a library or on a plane, some damage is bound to happen. While I have had this skin on for over a week now, bringing this laptop with me everywhere, I cannot see a scratch and the skin has not begun to peel off in any spot whatsoever.

Google Nexus S in white spied

A new color of the Google Nexus S smartphone has surfaced over in Germany. The leaked phone has a white back with the same black front we are used to seeing. The phone reminds me of an Oreo after the top wafer has been eaten.

Other than having the white back, the phone is the same on the front and under the cover. I guess we can thank Apple for making the white phone thing common. That’s it, nothing Earth-shattering here just a white back.

So if this phone were to land in the US would the white back make you want to buy it more than the black version we already have? I can’t see anyone that is interested in the thing holding out for a different color, but choice is nice for people just thinking about getting a new phone and shopping around I guess.

Acer Aspire One E100 Education netbook dual-boots Windows & Android

Acer has unveiled its latest netbook, the Aspire One E100 Education, and as the name suggests it’s targeted at classrooms. The 10.1-inch 1024 x 600 ultraportable dual-boots Windows 7 and Android – the latter being positioned as an instant-on option for quick browsing – and can be specified with a rubberized coating for bump protection; there’s also a pocket into which a student can slot their name card, so that multiple E100 units don’t get confused.

Other specs include a 250GB hard-drive, 1GB of RAM and WiFi b/g/n, together with Bluetooth 2.1 and a multi-format memory card reader. It uses an unspecified Intel Atom processor, weighs about a pound and is 24mm thick; Acer reckons the battery is good for 8hrs of runtime.

As for software, there’s apparently a variety of free education apps on offer, and Acer also preloads its Classroom Manager app which allows a teacher to remotely interact with multiple student systems. No word on pricing at this stage.

Moneual Labs Dual-Screen PC case perfect for HTPC

Moneual Labs is no stranger to unusual PC cases – their I*magine HTPC grabbed a CES Innovation award back in 2008 – and while the new Dual Screen PC (DSPC) case might have a more traditional basic form-factor, we’re liking the huge integrated display. Details are scant – all Moneual says is that the DSPC is “a tower‐type slim PC case with a built-in screen for use in dual-screen mode with a standard monitor” – but it doesn’t take much to realise that this would make for an awesome HTPC setup.

The bulk of the fascia is taken up by a broad display – no word on whether it’s a touchscreen or not – which can be used to show icons and widgets; there’s also an optical drive slot and various ports. We can imagine slotting the DSPC under our HDTV, using the big screen for video playback and the onboard display for status and control.

The CES 2011 team obviously liked the DSPC case too; they’ve given Moneual Labs another Innovations award, one of six this year. The Moneual Labs DSPC is expected to go on sale in Q3 2011, priced at around $1,500.

Sony Releases New Portable Radio

Sometimes, even old technologies remain relevant. Today, radio can be accessed through stereos and even on FM-enabled smartphones, although the sight of a portable radio seems to be rare nowadays. Sony, however, would like to take the old-fashioned radio device into the new decade with its ICZ-R50, an AM/ FM radio recorder that can contain 4GB of internet memory, which can be expanded up to 32GB with SD/ SDHC or Memory stick.

Apart from having voice recorder functions, the Sony ICZ-R50 is compatible to MP3 and WMA files, which can be stored in the device via internal memory or memory cards. The radio weighs 532 grams and comes with two 0.5-watt speakers.

The Sony ICZ-R50 portable radio will hit the Japanese market on February 21 for US$218. Whether it will be released overseas, we highly doubt it

HTC HD2 Becomes Dual-Boot WP7 and Android

The HTC HD2 has been tauted as one of the most flexible smartphones to date after hacks are able to port the phone with Windows Phone 7, which make people wonder what would happen if the WP7 and its native Android OS are on the same device at the same time?

Technically, that cannot happen, but people at xda-developers are figuring out ways to install both WP7 and Android on the HTC HD2 using the same SD card, enabling users to switch from one OS to another. You can learn how it is done through this video demonstration.

Toshiba led anonymous Tegra waits 2 honeycomb Android released tablet

Let the Tegra 2 power to start Android honeycomb tablet! Apparently (and understandably), which is far from a sheet 2 Nickname Toshiba launching its new tablet CES unnamed Android of 10.1 inches, and we must say, our brief look at a unit that does not work a few weeks ago, only be what it to takes out from the rest .. at least over quality and manufacturing specifications. The tablet has a capacitive high screen resolution 1280 x 800 resolution, along with an accelerometer and ambient light sensor (or what has been called Toshiba Adaptive display).

It also has a 5 megapixel camera at the front and rear 2-megapixel one. Yes, it is well stocked and show only a brief look at the pictures below that the full-size USB drive and HDMI ports, a mini-USB jack and SD card slot offers.

Although it was not on the dual-core 2-powered Tablet round Tegra, which eventually run "developed for the next version of Android for the pills" aka "Honeycomb, we have taken the easy, said spill-resistant , rear tire was very solid in my hand and felt the 1.7 pounds, 0.6-inch thick tablet comparable to iPad terms of portability. Oh, and we said that the swap is above the back cover, we can not only change its color, but you can replace the battery?

We have said that you had some of the ingredients to make it go away, but obviously we are missing some information here to make further decisions. Toshiba claim that the tablet in the first half of 2011 (standby course was presented officially honeycomb) and price competition will be displayed, but dig deeper as it gets in Las Vegas and hopefully report back with some impressions of a work unit.
